Understanding WAEC Grading
How the West African Examinations Council converts raw scores into A1–F9 grades and what each band means for admission.

TL;DR
WAEC grades from A1 (Excellent) down to F9 (Fail) on a nine-band scale. Universities typically require credit passes (C6 or better) in five subjects including English and Mathematics.

What WAEC is
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) administers the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) taken by candidates in Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, The Gambia and Liberia.
The nine bands
WAEC uses a nine-point letter grade scale:
- A1 — Excellent (75–100%)
- B2 — Very Good (70–74%)
- B3 — Good (65–69%)
- C4 — Credit (60–64%)
- C5 — Credit (55–59%)
- C6 — Credit (50–54%)
- D7 — Pass (45–49%)
- E8 — Pass (40–44%)
- F9 — Fail (0–39%)
What counts as a "credit"
A "credit pass" is anything from C6 or better. Most Nigerian universities require five credit passes in relevant subjects — always including English Language and Mathematics — for admission.
How the raw score becomes a grade
WAEC applies a moderation process each year: raw marks are converted after standard-setting to keep the difficulty of each year comparable. That is why raw score cut-offs can shift year to year, even though the band letters (A1…F9) stay the same.
Common pitfalls
- A D7 or E8 is technically a pass, but is not a credit — it will not satisfy university admission requirements.
- WAEC results can be withheld pending investigation of malpractice; a withheld result is not the same as a fail.
- Result checker PINs are single-use. Buying a used PIN from a third party will not work.
